I live at the shipyard, I grew up downwind of it, and I was one of the lead plaintiffs in the environmental justice litigation there that garnered a $6.3M settlement.

Eleven months of silence about plutonium is unacceptable. As supervisor, I will demand the Navy reinstate the Restoration Advisory Board it dissolved and expand capacity for the Citizen’s Advisory Committee, so residents hear findings directly; insist on independent verification of testing before any land transfer; and put every delay on public record through city hearings, with our congressional delegation at the table.

Nobody handed us the truth here. We fought for it, and I will keep fighting against environmental racism.

Q:  What do you think you can accomplish as Supervisor?

Theo Ellington: Create a community and economic development plan that benefits the people who already live and work here. Additionally, housing, transportation, and job creation should not be planned in isolation. Building off the ideals of the Eastern Neighborhood Plan, we need a vision that reaches the entire district, and that includes building much needed housing, establishing new economic hubs in our heavy industrial warehouse area, and maximizing the transit options that connect us to the rest of the city and region. Ensure basic city services reach our neighborhoods. This means a responsive and accessible City government. City Hall should work for the people, not the other way around. I’ll fight to make our local government–and the District 10 Supervisor’s office specifically–more transparent, accountable, and accessible, so residents can get answers, not excuses. From providing language access, to fixing potholes, ensuring cleaner streets, and funding essential programs, our neighborhoods deserve results delivered with urgency, respect, and the cultural sensitivity needed for everyone to thrive. Meet the demands of affordability: housing, transit, childcare, food security, and public education. The rising cost of living is putting enormous pressure on families across District 10. Affordability is not just about housing, it’s about the total cost of everyday life. I will work to expand affordable housing options, improve reliable and affordable public transit by expanding subsidies for those who need it, support access to quality free and low cost childcare, and strengthen food security by attracting grocery stores and supporting local food providers. We should also be exploring a universal basic income program for San Francisco, because too many people are struggling.

Each issue reflected a larger question: whether District 10 receives the same urgency, resources, and governmental attention afforded to other parts of San Francisco.

Theo Ellington repeatedly emphasized executive experience, affordable housing production, homeownership opportunities, and creating pathways for long-term wealth within the community. Throughout the evening, he argued that government should be judged by its ability to deliver measurable results.

Recently, under the leadership of the new executive director, Theo Ellington, numerous donation-based concerts from a myriad of genres with international and phenomenal local artists have taken place, among other events, resuscitating positive cultural life on Third Street. With so many people struggling with food insecurity, keeping a roof over their family’s head, and other issues that scratch at the poverty line, the Ruth Williams Opera House is turning into the place where the community, for a few hours every month, can do as Bob Marley instructed, “Forget your troubles, and dance.”

I sat down with Ruth Williams Opera House Executive Director Theo Ellington to discuss this cultural renaissance taking place in the heart of Hunters Point.
