During a recent Friday in the neighborhood, Cuban jazz pianist Chuchito Valdés stopped Ellington, the interim executive director of the Ruth Williams Opera House, for a quick hello.
“How are you, my brother?”
“Living the dream, sir,” Ellington said.

I’m excited to announce that I’m running for District 10 Supervisor in San Francisco in November 2026. I would be honored to earn your support and generous contribution to help kick off our campaign!
As a third-generation San Franciscan and Bayview native, these are the neighborhoods that made me. My grandfather first moved to this city from the segregated South, seeking a better life during the Great Migration, and found a job as a laborer. My single mom raised my brother and me on $18,000 a year, working concessions at Giants and 49ers games. I am proud that her sacrifices allowed me to be the first in my family to graduate from college.
